Visually Glorious, Emotionally Upsetting
Yes. I’m aware that fall is many people’s favorite season. It’s decidedly NOT mine. In fact, I have a longstanding seasonal aversion. While many of y’all look forward to the crisp, cool air, the scent of spice everywhere, and football season, I’m mourning the end of summer. This is not the first time I’ve written about my feelings on this subject and may not be my last.
One might think that because I am a lover of nature, am both mesmerized and enthralled with the visual spectacle of fall’s color, this season would be one of my favorites. But it isn’t. I’ve analyzed why this is for a very long time. First off, I love summer and its sunshine, warmth, long days and my summer wardrobe. As a fashion lover, I must confess that I DO LOVE my fall wardrobe too. Then autumn rolls in and what it brings up for me is a dread of a cold winter ahead and death. Needless to say, nearly everything in nature is dying.
This viewpoint was decidedly solidified when my precious Mom passed on the last day of summer last year, coinciding with my Dad’s death just 11 months prior. Yet another reason to not care for this season.
I have always loved the well-known Ecclesiastes Bible verse — you know the one about a time and season for everything? I’d just prefer to plant and reap! I can certainly appreciate the extraordinary beauty of autumn. I just wish it would hurry up and leave.
Ironically, I prefer the “dead of winter” to this Fall season. Maybe this is because I know spring and rebirth are coming next?
Who’s with me? I know I’m not the only person who’s not an avid fall fan. Fall lovers, feel free to make your cases as to why you love it!
