I’ve been spending an extraordinary amount of time in my office lately, working on this blog. And somewhere between paying bills, writing my “to do” lists, attending virtual meetings, chatting with friends and the occasional daydreams, I started wondering: Is my office a reflection of me?
After looking around at the rather eclectic collection of things I’ve accumulated over the years, I’m beginning to think the answer is yes.
Ocean State of Mind
I designed this office when we moved int this house 16 years ago as a makeshift ocean haven. The sign above my French doors leading out into the hallway near Grand Central Station (the kitchen of course), says: “Ocean State of Mind.” My office color is cream as you can see by the photos accented with Tiffany blue shelves and light pink furniture. It is a calm, serene, peaceful sanctuary. I even had a fireplace installed so that in the dead of winter, I could make my office warm and cozy and I could at least pretend to be surrounded by warmth and sunshine.
Although the original theme was meant to have an ocean vibe complete with shells and oceanic art, over the years I’ve also managed to fill the shelves to the brim with other Berit Things, including little catch—all boxes, old birthday cards I can’t part with, crowns, an old golf teapot I bought decades ago, artwork by my two daughters, pictures of my favorite people, books about flowers, fashion, design, art, religious/spiritual subjects.
I have many books. I love books. I buy books with the best intent of reading them but often, (true confession) I just look at them and say to myself: “I should read that book” but rarely do.
The Little Things That Bring Me Joy
Lastly, I’ll acknowledge my “messy” desk. I would describe it as organized chaos. I have “piles”…but honestly, I do know where everything is. It’s a conundrum. The vibe anyone would get stepping into my husband’s office is the exact opposite. There are no papers out and everything is in its exact place. Proof that opposites attract? At least when it comes to neatness!
Looking around, I realize this room has become less about the ocean theme I originally designed and more about people, places, and memories and little things that bring me joy.
And now I’m curious about you. Does your office or other special place in your home reflect who you are? Are you surrounded by treasured keepsakes or do you prefer things neatly tucked away. I’d love to hear what you think!
